Hassia Packaging Pvt. Ltd., a 100 percent fully owned subsidiary of OYSTAR Holding GmbH Germany, is at the forefront of providing innovative and complete packaging solutions. The company aims at offering world class solutions at competitive prices. In a free wheeling conversation K. Ravi, Managing Director, Hassia Packaging shares some of the successful strategies of the company.

How would you comment on the Indian packaging industry? Where would you place Hassia Packaging in it?
Branding of food and advent of retailing is bringing packaging to the focus. Therefore one should see accelerated growth in the coming years. Hassia provides solutions that increase packaging efficiency at very competitive prices. Pouch is one of the cheapest containers to package a product. We, therefore, offer maximum solutions centered around this package form. Packaging efficiency can be greatly increased by accurate dosing.

Hassia is a subsidiary of OYSTAR Holding GmbH Germany. Brief us on the origin of the company highlighting its objectives.
We are a 100 percent subsidiary of Oystar and started our operations in the year 2000.

Our objectives are to offer complete packaging solutions centered around pouches, jars, cans, cups, tubs and bottles. We believe in improving packaging yield through very accurate dosing of products. Hassia produces widest range of weighing and volumetric dosing systems for solids. We will very soon offer the same competency for liquids as well.

What are the packaging products and solutions manufactured at Hassia? Tell us about the company's new initiatives.
We manufacture the modular vertical form fill and seal machine, weighers for all types of solids, volumetric auger and cup fillers. In addition we also offer jar and can indexers.

The new initiatives of the company include yoghurt filling in cups, butter and margarine filling in tubes and juice filling in bottles.

Which are the major segments you cater to? Name some of your major customers.
We cater to segments like detergent, rice/sugar, tea/coffee, retail, dairy, agrochemicals, snack foods, seeds, salt, flour and health drinks. Some of our major customers are P&G, HUL, Cadbury, Dabur, Kohinoor Foods, LT Overseas and Tata Tea.

As compared to the global technology, where does India lack in the packaging segment?
Indian machines are comparable with the global standards as far as small and medium outputs are concerned. We, however, need to develop combination weighing technology used for weighing snacks and candies as these weighers are still imported.

Indian technology is innovative when delivering on cost. This has really helped many manufacturers to adopt these technologies.

What do you think of the current market sentiment? Do you feel there is a slowdown?
The slowdown, I feel, is more of a psychological issue. Most of our customers are still growing. However, the attitude towards investment is of wait and watch in some companies. One could see a shift in consumer preference to brands offering better value (in terms of price).

What are the future plans of Hassia Packaging? Will the company extend its reach in India?
Yes, we are planning to extend our market in India as well as in the export markets. In addition to the other new products, Hassia will soon launch a high speed bagging machines to meet the packaging requirement of large volume brands.
