The joint initiative of Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL) and Print Packaging .Com (P) Ltd gave a platform to the Converting School for second year running from August 6-7, 2008 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Day 1 “Something that is long, thin and flexible is a web,” Dr. Roisum welcomed the attendees on the first day of the Converting School. Starting off the Web handling session, he gave an insight on the mechanical parts of machines, which according to him revolve around the rollers. He gave a detailed explanation of topics like tension, drives, load control and the nip mechanisms. The attendees were free to raise queries wherever the understanding appeared difficult to them. With the graphical and textual presentation of his valuable notes, he created an atmosphere of a complete classroom session Speaking about the benefits derived from the first day session, Rackesh Langer, chief technical officer, CoulorJet India Ltd. said, “With a man having 30 years of experience in the industry, the training school had to be successful. Dr. Roisum has in-depth knowledge of every topic related to converting and we are sure to benefit from it, even when we are not directly related to the converting industry.” Even though not being from a technical background, Suvriti Rajbanshi, Director, Mrideep Impex Pvt. Ltd. found the first day of Converting School interesting. “I feel I have come to the right place to gain technical knowledge related to the converting industry. Dr. Roisum is explaining things with examples that have made the session easily understandable,” he said. Adding to the same thought Sunil Nair, production supervisor, UPM Raflatac said, “The session is appearing useful and on the first day itself we have got to learn a lot about the converting industry mechanisms.” However, Suketu Dhabalia, general manager (marketing) felt that the end of the second day session would actually give him a count of benefits he derived from the School. “I am here to gain knowledge and the process is on. The benefits of participation have already started rolling in.” After the success of the first day session, the attendees are looking forward to the second day of Converting School, which would cover topics like wrinkling, spreading, winding etc. Day 2 IF a converter came in with a doubt on day one, he left enlightened and more confident on the second and the final day of the Converting School. The second day started with the most discussed problem of web handling and converting; ‘wrinkling’. Dr. Roisum started the session with a briefing on the causes of wrinkling as well as the cures. The cause behind the wrinkling was a serious concern with all the attendees. Dr. Roisum explained the importance of keeping the web flat and the essence of alignment in rollers. “Wrinkling is a major cause of waste, delay and customer complaints. Misalignment and tension are the basic reasons behind it”, he revealed. Further in the session, Dr. Roisum discussed the various aspects of baggy web troubleshooting, process fault and spreading. He said that one should never over bow the rollers, as that brings spreading problems. Following the quote – Appearances can be deceptive, he have the example of Spiral Grooving to explain the spreading further. “Spiral grooving has the quality of fooling thousands of people with its appearance. It appears to be spreading but the fact is that it does not spread. It just creates an illusion of spreading. So, it is important to observe things than just see and believe.” Later during the session, Dr. Roisum covered all the essential components of slitting and winding. The question and answer session in the mind and the end of the session helped the attendees get a final say of the expert on their doubts and defects at the plants. At the end of the session, we took some bites from the students of the School on the benefits they derived from the training. According to Gaurav Prehar, director, Pressure Sensitive Systems, the School gave him a different perspective of looking towards things. “I have gained knowledge on various mechanisms of Web-handling and problems like wrinkling, spreading etc. This is certainly going to help me in future. I am glad I attended the school.” The training helped T. Shankar Basu, mechanical engineer, Morgan Industries Ltd. to identify the reasons behind some of the problems related to winding and laminating at his plant. “I have gathered much more information than what I had thought of,” he said. Commenting on the venue and presentation of the School, Gavin Lunt, sales executive, Bobst Group said, “The auditorium and the arrangement of the School have been quite favourable for us. The attendees could easily interact with Dr. Roisum and take his suggestions on the problems they were facing. Dr. Roisum managed and explained difficult subjects with his explanatory presentation and examples. Everyone could relate with the topics discussed.” For Tressa Joy, executive-marketing, Motion Control Systems Production Machine, Siemens Ltd., the discussions on defects were very informative. “It was a great experience to learn from a true veteran of web-handling. The two-day session covered almost every component related to the web mechanism. The defects were discussed at length and the troubleshooting methods were explained with practical examples. The training could not be better,” she claimed. Suggesting some improvements for the session next year, Mahesh A. Khandwala, development manager, Erhardt+Leimer (India) Pvt. Ltd. piped, “The session was overall good. Various problems related to web-handling and shrinking could be figured out and the remedies could be discussed. However, few more case studies could have helped in the further understanding of the topics.” Thus, the Converting School came to a happy and successful ending, giving an extensive knowledge to all the attendees. The participants are eagerly looking forward to the session next year.
